Practical exercises
Objective
The objective of the practical exercises is to allow you to get hands-on and
personal experience on the items previously covered in classroom lectures.
We have a little photo-album showing what's going on.
The exercises
We know you will enjoy them - previous students have. Be
prepared to learn:
- Breath holding time. Monitor on yourself how breathing pattern and
breathing gases affect your breath holding time.
- Middle ear equilibration. You know you can do this based based on
previous flying or diving. But how much pressure would you need
to establish within the throat (Valsalva) before the Eustachian tubes
actually open - measure on yourself! And how does different body positions
and activities affect this - you'll learn through hands-on experience.
- ENT examination for diving physicians. We present, discuss and allow
you to practice some of the most important ENT examinations
techniques. We guess that some of the equipment and techniques
described would be new and of practical use as you come home.
- Static loading. Classroom lectures will teach you how different body
positions affect your breathing pattern and comfort.
- Chamber dive. You'll experience the recompression not only from the
outside but even from the inside during a (shallow) simulated dive.
You'll get a personal impression of how patients treated for diving related
injuries experience the recompression treatment.
- Diving accident. We simulate a diving accident - the decision for
further diagnosis and treatment is yours. We videotape the exercise
and discuss lessons learned in the classroom afterward.
- Neurological examination. We brush some dust of skills trained some
(many?) years ago in medical school. Believe us - you will enjoy it!
